Jon Bryant – What Takes You

Written by Shan. Filed under Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter. Tagged . No comments.

A couple of years ago while browsing the iTunes store, I came across a single of the week from a Canadian artist that I had never heard of before- Jon Bryant. Impressed with the beauty of the track, I went in search of his other work and quickly became a fan of the soft acoustic style that characterized his debut album “Two Coasts for Comfort.” Today, Bryant releases his second album titled “What Takes You,” and from the first listen, I can already tell that his signature acoustic style prevails.

Filled with sentimental and melancholic tracks, “What Takes You” is the perfect follow-up to Bryant’s earlier release, and as the artist reveals in his personal review of the album, each song has been included to evoke different emotions from the audience. He states “we wanted to create a mood and a progression of emotions with the songs… I like the way music can draw one specific reaction from one person and another very distinct reaction from another.” Indeed, “What Takes You” will no doubt play on your emotions and remind you of what pure and natural musical talent sounds like. See for yourself, and if you like what you hear, purchase the album on iTunes or Bandcamp!

Radiohead – The King of Limbs Tour

Written by Gold Gong. Filed under Alternative Rock, Electronic, Experimental, Indie, Indie Rock, Rock. Tagged , , , , , , , , , . No comments.

Anyone who knows me, knows that Radiohead has to be one of my favourite bands. From albums such as “OK Computer” to “Kid A” they have truly ruled the world of Experimental Alternative Rock. Radiohead is currently on tour with their 8th studio album titled “The King of Limbs“. “The King of Limbs” was the second Radiohead album to be recorded in LA.

The album is filled with Thom Yorke’s soothingly haunting vocals on tracks like “Little by Little” and “Separator” and great sampling and drums on the track “Lotus Flower” which was originally released as a single. I’m usually not a man for music videos but the music video for “Lotus Flower” has to be my favourite one of them all. After watching the video I instantly was in a good mood. It’s simply Thom Yorke breaking out his signature dance and him just having a good time while he sings the song. It’s great to see an artist who truly feels one with his music. If you haven’t seen the music video yet, definitely give it a view.

For those in Toronto, definitely stop by the concert on June 16th at Downsview Park

Here’s a little gift from Thom, Jonny, Colin, Ed and Phil

Rachael Yamagata – Chesapeake

Written by Shan. Filed under Blues, Indie Pop, Singer-Songwriter. Tagged . No comments.

I have long been a fan of Rachael Yamagata, a singer-songwriter from Virginia who is well-known for her bluesy indie songs that have been featured in numerous television shows including The O.C, Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, and One Tree Hill. Her two studio albums, “Happenstance” (2004) and “Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart” (2008), are cherished members of my CD collection and have been listened to time and time again; and so when I learned that Yamagata had released a new album in October of last year, I was eager to hear it.

Called “Chesapeake“, the album is fan-funded and in my opinion, an interesting departure from her earlier work. Songs like ”Full On” and “You Won’t Let Me” are similar to the style established in her debut album, whereas other tracks such as “Even If I Don’t,” “Saturday Morning,” and “Stick Around” are a refreshing change from what we have already seen from Yamagata in the past. In it’s entirety, “Chesapeake” exists as another successful release from the talented singer-songwriter, and even though it is still new to my collection, it will no doubt become one of my favourite albums alongside Yamagata’s other works in the near future.

Matisyahu – Sunshine

Written by inferno. Filed under Reggae. Tagged , . No comments.

My favorite Hasidic Jew is back with a new soulful tune to kick this summer off right.

Matisyahu was thrown into the spotlight over the past few years because of his unique image as an orthodox Jew who could generate beautiful reggae music. However aside from his image, Matisyahu is an amazing artist who pours his heart and soul into every song. His album, Youth (2006), is one of my favorite albums to listen to all the way through.

This new track, Sunshine, he has previously played at concerts and such, but he has now officially released it as a single for upcoming album this July. I’ve been playing this song on repeat while driving around in this beautiful weather. Enjoy and happy beginning to summer!

Hoodie Allen – All American

Written by inferno. Filed under Album Review, Hip-Hop. Tagged , . No comments.

After really enjoying Pep Rally and most of Leap Year, I had really high expectations for Hoodie Allen‘s new album All American. In both these previous mixtapes, Hoodie blends witty lyrics with great samples and beats. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, this guy’s got serious potential.”

That being said, I listened to All American a few weeks ago and was a bit disappointed. My roommate insisted that I keep listening to it and warm up to it. It has taken a bit, but I really do like this album now. Originally, I wasn’t so impressed because Hoodie does a lot more singing that rapping on this album, but the music is just a different twist. No samples, but really catchy beats that’ll stay in your head all day. I found myself blasting “No Interruption” and “No Faith in Brooklyn” (feat. Jhameel) pretty loudly in my room yesterday.

Check out these two songs and the rest of the album on  .

Blitzen Trapper – Skirts on Fire

Written by Shan. Filed under Country, Folk, Indie. Tagged . No comments.

Earlier this week I wrote about a free mixtape released by The Family Records in celebration of Record Store Day, an internationally-celebrated event that brings together artists and fans in April of every year. The mixtape includes a variety of songs covered by Wakey!Wakey!, and wanting more, I decided to embark on a search for some other music released by different artists on this day.

The Indie Rock Cafe Podcast helped in my search… on their channel they featured a bunch of unique indie songs recorded specifically for Record Store Day, and from all of them, one particular song stood out to me the most. Called “Skirts on Fire” by country/folk band Blitzen Trapper, the tune is perfect for those upcoming summer days; and while I am not the biggest country fan, this track has more of an upbeat indie sound to it that is very appealing to me.

The Middle East

Written by Shan. Filed under Indie. Tagged . No comments.

There’s something very tragic about the music of Australian indie band The Middle East. Formed in 2005, The Middle East released three EPs and two full-length albums before cutting their career short in 2011 for what can only be referred to as unknown personal reasons. With a strong fanbase who are pulling for their return to the indie music scene, all that we can do is hope that this talented band will re-group and continue to make amazing music together someday.

Until then, we are lucky enough to have the music that they did release, which is extremely beautiful and unique; and even though it reminds us of the potential lost, we cannot help but enjoy it. So take a listen and cross your fingers that The Middle East will make a return in the near future.

Wakey!Wakey! – The Cover Party

Written by Shan. Filed under Indie Pop, Indie Rock. Tagged , . No comments.

It’s no secret by now that I am a huge fan of Wakey!Wakey!, an indie pop/rock band from Brooklyn, New York that we featured here on TBT for the first time a few months ago. Led by frontman Mike Grubbs, Wakey!Wakey! is the type of band that never disappoints, so when I learned that they had released a new CD available as a free download from The Family Records store, I was eager to take a listen. To my surprise, it was not at all what I was expecting. It was even better.

In April of every year, independent record stores around the globe come together in celebration of music. Known as Record Store Day, numerous artists get involved in performances, appearances, meet and greets, and signings, and in the past, talented musicians such as Radiohead, The Black Keys, Duran Duran, Great Lake Swimmers, Ryan Adams, Wilco, and Florence and the Machine (to name a few) have recorded new music in celebration of this internationally-cherished day. Last month, more than 400 artists jumped on the bandwagon, releasing material for their fans around the world, and Wakey!Wakey! was one of them.

Called “The Cover Party,” Wakey!Wakey!’s album is an eight-track long tribute to an ecclectic mix of well-known songs. Featuring tracks such as Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy,” The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love,” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” the CD expertly celebrates different types of music while still incorporating Grubbs’ signature indie sound.

If you’re interested, head on over to The Family Records website and download the album while it is still available here!

Caribou – Odessa

Written by Gold Gong. Filed under Alternative Pop, Electronic. Tagged , , , . 1 Comment.

Over the past few days, the song “Odessa” by Canadian artist, “Caribou” or Daniel Victor Snaith has been frequenting my ears. I haven’t been able to get enough of this song.  I must have played it about 5 times today! This is by no means a new release as it was released back in April of 2010 on his album titled “Swim“.  The song has great sampling and subtle vocals.  If you haven’t heard this song yet, definitely give it a listen.

Great Lake Swimmers

Written by Shan. Filed under Folk, Indie Rock. Tagged , , , . No comments.

One of the best ways to discover new music is to talk to your friends about it. Over coffee or a casual game of DJ Hero, you might just end the night with a list of recommendations that later become your new musical obsessions. This is exactly how I discovered the Great Lake Swimmers, a folk/rock band originally from Wainfleet, Ontario that was recommended to me from my good friend Mike. Upon hearing their song “Your Rocky Spine” I was immediately hooked, and couldn’t wait to share their music with all of you.

Currently on tour to promote their fifth studio album “New Wild Everywhere” released earlier this month, the Great Lake Swimmers will no doubt impress you with their music that has been compared to the work of Iron and Wine, Sufjan Stevens, and even Neil Young. It’s a funny coincidence that lead vocalist Tony Dekker once stated that “Music is interesting because it brings people together, and the more that I do this the more I realize the importance to that.” He couldn’t have been more right- take a listen to the band’s tracks below, and if you like what you hear, take a cue from Tony and my friend Mike and spread the word to your pals. There really is no better way to discover new music than by sharing it amongst your closest friends.
