To start my year of concerts off on the right foot, i had the great opportunity to go see The Most Serene Republic and Broken Social Scene play a show at the London Music Hall on January 16th.  I know that that’s a long time ago and that i’ve put this off for a while, but let me just say i’ve been clamping down on my school work, and i have started to prioritize properly as a part of my new years resolution.  So not only did i get to see the show, but i also had the chance to sit down with the Most Serene Republic for an interview at Cousin Vinny’s Pizzeria (but that interview is sitting on a recorder too far from me right now, so you’ll read of it on a later date).

After a couple drinks before the show, I was standing by the bar when i see a couple of the bandmates who i just interviewed hobble up on stage and pick their instruments up one by one, testing them, just to make sure they’re up to par.  While they were just doing their thing, i felt giddy and had never been so excited for a warm up, EVER.  As the show started, I got more and more into the music from the band (who i was more excited to see than the headlining BSS).  What was special about this crew was that lead singer Adrian Jewett and pianist Ryan Lenssen added an extra dimension to what would and could be seen at many gigs by bringing out their multiple talents and at certain points (including during some of the BSS set), playing horns (Lenssen pulling out a trumpet and Jewett, a trombone).  So about half way through the set, the band just went all out on one of my favorite tracks by them, Heavens To Purgatory, which was a great rendition that got the biggest rise out of the audience, as the chorus of Gadzooks, Gadzooks, Gadzooks chimed in.  Their set went on and as it was coming to a close, the band pulled out their song Present of Future End, which blew me away altogether.

As the set finished, they gave way for Broken Social Scene to come up and start their thing.  At this point, i was thinking to myself (as i often do when drinking) about how the majority of the male contingent at the concert looked like Dallas Green.  Anyway, in their London debut, Broken Social Scene started off on a great note, pulling World Sick off as their opening song, which might have very well been my favorite of their set, if not followed by Texico Bitches.

I really enjoyed 7/4 (Shoreline) and Cause=Time and Chase Scene after that and then the show went on seemingly without a hitch, which to the girls who i met earlier that night who drove 6 hours to get to the show, was unreal.
