A.A Bondy When The Devil’s Loose

I know it’s been a couple weeks since I’ve written a post, but that’s about to change. Truth is, a couple friends and I, including Nab, spent our reading week oversees in Europe. Though I won’t bore you with the details of the trip, which was incredible, I will tell you that my time overseas lend itself to the discovery and rediscovery of a lot of music.

One of the artists I rediscovered was A.A Bondy, an American folk singer-song writer, born and raised in Birmingham Alabama. For those of you aren’t familiar with Bondy’s history or the artist himself, you might be interested to know that prior to his career as a solo folk artist, he was a member of a Birmingham grunge band by the name of Verbena. Yes, a grunge band (youtube them if you don’t believe me), though his recent music would never suggest such a history.

After the band broke up, Bondy made his way to upstate New York, where his style was altered forever. With two vocally and lyrically strong albums, American Heart (2007) and more recently When the Devils Loose (2009), Bondy’s somber and calming style has made him one of my favorite singer-song writers. Two of his tracks I can’t seem to get enough are Oh the Vampyre and When the Devils Loose, both off his latest album.
