After this past weekend of unprecedented online coverage of Coachella, I kinda just want to recap on my watchings of the festival in the desert last night.
I was legitimately torn between several acts at a time, be it my favorite band ever, The National and my future wife, Ellie Goulding or some of my favorite acts at the moment Chromeo and producers Ratatat then there was the introduction of the Strokes and the replay of Mumford & Sons and Best Coast and Jimmy Eat World and Fistful Of Mercy and Nas & Damien Marley… and Kanye (who as the minute wore on, was the cause for people on twitter to start betting on how long his delay would be).
Now i don’t think i’ve ever seen anything quite like Kanye’s performance, being raised into the air on a 40 foot platform after some 40 stunning “angels” taken from his movie Runaway’s concept dancing around like loonies for a while. Justin Vernon was out on stage for a couple times this set, but Monster was a great track for this set. Then for his second song, he dropped Power to which the entire crowd was chanting the sample from King Crimson. But what won the whole weekend had to be Jesus Walks, which isn’t “just that first hit of his” it was just ridiculous! Then Diamonds From Sierra Leone and like ya, enough of the classics were covered, making me so satisfied with his set. What it comes down to is: I need to see a Kanye West show within the next year. The end might have been the best two songs he could have chosen to perform. Lost In The World (the song that i declared is my favorite of the decade last night) and Hey Mama. Having dived into some of his deeper feelings earlier in the 3 Act set, Kanye jumped into and out of his hype-songs (which outnumber those of any active musician) and mellowed it out for the ending of the show and the festival as a whole. I’m basically going to get a kickstarter project up to fund my way to Indio for 2012 so please help me if i do get around to that.
