I’ve been hearing a lot of smack about Amy Winehouse’s death. I’ve over heard people saying how they don’t really care and read dozens of sarcastic comments on people’s “R.I.P Amy Winehouse” facebook statuses saying “she shoulda gone to rehab” or some other sort of retarded status update along the lines. Regardless of how she died and whether it had to do with her serious drug abuse or not, I don’t think that the death of such a talented musician should be taken so heartlessly. I’ve always really appreciated Winehouse’s music, she brought back motown, jazz, and soul to a generation that seemed to be showing less and less interest to these genres. She was one of the very few celebrated artists in today’s music with some real genuine talent and hopefully her music will inspire people to recognize real talent over auto-tuned pop music. I’ve decided to post 3 of my favorite Amy Winehouse tracks for this week’s Sample Sundays in tribute to her and her music.

Amy was the first of the Brit Soul divas to emerge. She preceded Adele, Duffy, Joss Stone, all of them. Amy’s death is a blow to the music world, but more importantly to the people close to her (friends, family…) I am going to make a dangerous assumption that it was drug-related and probably an overdose. Sad for anyone, famous or not. She obviously had many demons and could not deal with them without self-medicating. Did people reach out to her? Did she feel all alone in this world, any with success? Did she suffer from a mental illness? Many people have these symptoms and complete suicide every year and it doesn’t make the news. Fame doesn’t rid you of sorrow and self-worth. It is sad day for everyone when someone decides their life has no value. God bless you Amy and thanks for the short, but indelible legacy
