Gold Leaves – The Ornament (Album Review)
Grant Olsen’s solo project entitled Gold Leaves is my latest obsession. Formally one half of Seattle-based folk duo, Arthur & Yu, The Ornament is a testimony to Olsen’s outstanding songwriting abilities. Released on August 16th, the album has been four long years in the making.
You may be wondering why it took him so long to release the album. Well the truth of it is Olsen had started working on the album about four years ago, but tabled the project when his laptop and notebooks were stolen from his bag.
Fast forward the four years and you have refined solo-album, which I consider to be classic in the making. Sounding similar to the fleet foxes at times, Olsen’s mysterious and calming voice mixed with harmonies from his label-mates The Moondoggies and percussion by Ben McConnell of Beach House is a winning combination.
While i’d love to give a preview of the entire album, I have to urge you purchase a copy of The Ornament on itunes or your local music store. For now, i’ll leave you with three of my album highlights to give you a taste of what it’s all about.
