Athlete’s music, most recently described by the band as “electro-tinged, indie pop”, is among the most under rated out there. Unfortunately, while gaining some good exposure in the UK, the band has gone pretty much under the radar throughout their career. The band’s first album, Vehicles and Animals is my personal favorite. The album is their least mainstream, as Athlete was experimenting with new styles. Throughout the album there are strange, flaming lips like obscurities playing in the background, sure to catch your attention.
Other readers may as easily prefer the band’s later albums, Tourist, Beyond the Neighbourhood, and Black Swan they all represent a different stages in the band’s development. From Vehicles and Animals, You Got the Style and El Salvador define the album’s energetic style. On the other hand, the band’s second album Tourist, has songs like Wires and Half Light which define a deeper more lyric based Athlete.
The third and forth albums, Beyond the Neighbourhood and Black Swan respectively, remind me at times of a British Strokes. Even though their music isn’t as good in my opinion (it’s still dam good), the band’s new sound and style demonstrates their ability to create more mainstream music. Notable songs from the most recent albums include, Hurricane and Toyko from Beyond the Neighbourhood and Superhuman Touch and Black Swan Song from Black Swan.
