Massive Attack’s Heligoland album caused quite a bit of fuzz shortly after it’s release in 2010, hitting single digits in almost every album chart all over the world. The British duo’s wide range of music styles in their samples has been a huge part of their worldwide success and a vital ingredient to their trip-hop contribution to the large sea of music genres. Like most people Paradise Circus was the track that originally drew me to the album, and is a perfect example of how their samples can range in categories.

The track samples from Nina Simone’s See-Line Woman (a 1964 Jazz classic), Smashing Punkin’s Soma (a 1993 American alternative rock track) and Bat For Lashes’ Prescilla (a 2006 indie pop track).
