SAMPLE SUNDAY: MF Doom’s Gas Drawls

Today I came across a Sample Sunday post I wrote earlier in the year on De La Soul’s Eye Know track which samples a Steely Dan track. I felt like sharing with you guys another classic rap track that also samples Steely Dan quite well; MF Doom’s Gas Drawls. The first sample in Gas Drawls with the instrumental keys after the talking (at 0:06) is taken from Steely Dan’s 1977 Black Cow from near the end of the track (at 3:20). The Steely Dan track does continue on a loop throughout MF Doom’s track, however there is another super short vocal sample which they took from the start of the Steely Dan Track (at 0:27) where Donald Fagen sings “You were very high”.

Hearing the beat alongside the sample track really brings home how much of a genius Doom is when it comes to beatmaking and sampling. Thanks for posting
