Creativity or Inspiration

Creativity: such an interesting concept, especially in music. Time and time again do we see or hear some “coincidences” of similarities in riffs, lyrics, or song names. There are only so many words in the English language, so in many ways it is perhaps amazing how little overlap there is. Looking through my iTunes, I’ve found some of these. Interesting:

Runaway (Kanye West, Cartel, and Linkin’ Park)

Up, Up, and Away (Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, and a 1967 chart-topper in 1967 by Jimmy Webb)

Gravity (John Mayer, Coldplay, and Sara Bareilles)

The End (The Beatles, Kid Cudi, and Kings of Leon)

Perhaps some titling is to show respect for an artist’s inspiration in the past (or copying):

California Girls (Katy Perry and The Beach Boys)

Empire State of Mind (Jay-Z) and New York State of Mind (Billy Joel)

Welcome to the Jungle (Guns and Roses and Watch The Throne)

Money Maker (A Tribe Called Quest and Ludacris)

You can endlessly scour old lyrics and riffs to find them in new songs. Of course, there are samples (and of course Sample Sundays). But, let’s go ahead to 3:26-3:29 of this 1998 single. And then, let’s go ahead to the Nicki Minaj song at 0:12-0:20. Coincidence?
