Lana Del Ray – Video Games
I’ll admit that the first thing that made me listen to Lana Del Ray (real name: Elizabeth Grant) is the fact that, similar to myself, she was from a town in Upstate New York (real upstate, not Westchester). Although large geographically, we have very few big names to claim as our own so I was curious to hear about the girl who was making such a buzz on the cover of Q Magazine and in appearances on SNL.
Needless to say the previously mentioned buzz was for a reason. Del Ray’s voice is a deep and ominous beautiful – reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra or Cat Power. Her first single “Video Games” which has garnered over 22 million views on YouTube is an ideal showcase for her vocal range. Beginning with echoing church bells, Del Ray delivers a love song so emotionally intense it is almost suffocating to an extent. Basically, it is something you have to experience for yourself by listening to it. As for her career, Del Ray’s debut album is coming out January 30th and, if it is anything like “Video Games”, it is sure to be a success.
