Purity Ring – “Ungirthed”
Have you ever had a dream in which you were floating? Not the traditional “falling with no end in sight” kind but one in which you were peacefully balancing through the air around you? If that type of dream had a soundtrack Edmonton-duo Purity Ring would compose it. Made up of vocalist Megan James and programmer Corin Roddick, the song “Ungirthed” is the perfect mix of trance, synth, pop, and M83 leftovers.
Despite their catalog being limited to three songs on YouTube and having only started playing together a year ago, Purity Ring has continuously been praised by a very diverse groups of critics – from Pitchfork to NPR. Even more interesting than the fact that they were able to win over your Dad’s favorite radio channel, is the weird pipe-like machine the group uses to create the sounds heard on their songs. The most accurate description would be to say it looks like something you would see when you open the drawers beneath your sink. James, Roddick, and their drainage structure will be releasing an album this summer – just in time for floating through the lazy days of warm weather.
