Action Bronson – Shiraz
It seems, in today’s internet age, there are an endless supply of white rappers with mix tapes that play off their diverse gimmicks (he’s young! He’s college educated! He raps over Marina and the Diamonds!) while covering up the fact that they have no real talent to begin with. On paper, it would seem Action Bronson fits this stereotype – this Queens-native used to be a gourmet chef in New York City – cooking being a passion he gave up upon deciding to enter “the game.” However, one listen to the full-on ear assault that is Action Bronson and any preconceived notions of how good this guy should actually be are wiped clean away. With a flow that one could mistake for an earlier Ghostface Killah, Bronson tends to rap over samples of jazz and soul music that should conflict heavily with his raw delivery but somehow work. This is evident in “Shiraz” – a single from his excellent first album Dr. Lecter. Working with the coolest jazz flute since Ron Burgundy, Bronson makes sly allegories about comparing his cooking with his drug habits. Bon appétit indeed.
