SAMPLE SUNDAY: Common’s The Food
Here’s one of my favorite tracks by Common entitled The Food, featuring Kanye West. The track consists of two samples from two tracks that if it wasn’t for this song, would never come up in the same sentence. The first is a 1962 love ballad by Sam Cooke called Nothing Can Change This Love. You can hear the sampled piano notes on both Common’s track and Cooke’s track throughout pretty much the whole song, from start to end.
The second sample is actually not really a sample by definition because it wasn’t actually “borrowed” from the original track, but instead re-played or re-rapped by Common. This one is a from a track by MC Shan from his 1986 The Bridge. You can hear the same lyric sung on both tracks at around 30 seconds into either of the tracks.
