One could say that some people just have their hands on the pulse of the underground culture – picking up the resounding heartbeat of the cool new sound just before it echoes to life. This would accurately describe LA’s High5Collective who helped promote acts such as Odd Future and the Weeknd through video. Their latest discovery, London-based band Citizens! is no exception to their on-point choices. Citizens! themselves sound like a mix of Franz Ferdinand (whose lead singer and guitarist Alex Kapranos is producing their upcoming album), David Bowie, and the feeling of brilliance from MGMT’s “Kids” before it was overplayed. Their debt single, “True Romance’, is a dream combination of synth-based bass and drums with a lightness that is often missing from songs who display even a touch of electrical influence. Cue the bad puns about finding “true romance” with this band.
