The saying goes that one can never have too much of a good thing. While that might not always be true for everything, it is definitely true for rap collectives. Some of my favorite tracks have been produced when some of my favorite rappers join together – for references please see Odd Future, N.W.A., and Wu-Tang. Another rap collective, Black Hippy, is quickly becoming a new favorite. Composed of Los Angeles rappers Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q, the hippies have a raw sound – straight up beats and solid raps – that sounds authentic and amazing when compared to all of the auto-tuned rap going on. A great example of this is the single “Zip That Chop That” which still manages to sound slick and tough despite references to Minnie Mouse.
