When it comes to acoustic and folk, one name that always comes to mind is Jack Johnson. Just in time for earth day Jack Johnson has released his live album from the Kokua Festival 2012.
The Kokua Festival has been held for the past few years in support of Jack Johnson’s Kokua Hawaii Foundation. In Hawaiian, Kokua means to extend your help or simply to help others. Jack Johnson has done just that with his Kokua Hawaii Foundation by teaching Hawaiian kids about being eco-friendly.
The album features great Johnson tracks like “Breakdown” and “Better Together” with collaborations with artists such as Paula Fuga (a guest on “To The Sea”) and Ukelele virtuoso Jake Shimbukuro. Jake Shimbukuro’s talent is really showcased with his higher octave accents and ukelele solo in “Breakdown”.
The album also includes other great songs like “I Shall Be Released” with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder alongside Zach Gill and “Welcome to Jamrock” with reggae royalty, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley. The collaborations just add that little extra soothing touch to that great Jack Johnson surfer-tenor vibe. My two favourite songs on the album have to be “I Shall Be Released” and “Breakdown”. A great album for a great cause.
