It’s no secret by now that I am a huge fan of Wakey!Wakey!, an indie pop/rock band from Brooklyn, New York that we featured here on TBT for the first time a few months ago. Led by frontman Mike Grubbs, Wakey!Wakey! is the type of band that never disappoints, so when I learned that they had released a new CD available as a free download from The Family Records store, I was eager to take a listen. To my surprise, it was not at all what I was expecting. It was even better.
In April of every year, independent record stores around the globe come together in celebration of music. Known as Record Store Day, numerous artists get involved in performances, appearances, meet and greets, and signings, and in the past, talented musicians such as Radiohead, The Black Keys, Duran Duran, Great Lake Swimmers, Ryan Adams, Wilco, and Florence and the Machine (to name a few) have recorded new music in celebration of this internationally-cherished day. Last month, more than 400 artists jumped on the bandwagon, releasing material for their fans around the world, and Wakey!Wakey! was one of them.
Called “The Cover Party,” Wakey!Wakey!’s album is an eight-track long tribute to an ecclectic mix of well-known songs. Featuring tracks such as Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy,” The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love,” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” the CD expertly celebrates different types of music while still incorporating Grubbs’ signature indie sound.
