You heard right, RZA has done a cover of Alt-J’s “Breezeblocks.” Not only is this cover unexpected and not the presumed “hard as nails” one might expect you would never even guess it was RZA who covered it.
Not only does he not say a single word in the cover, but it’s mostly acoustic guitar. I’ll admit, it is a hard cover to get into the first time. I think once you can get over any pre-conceptions you have of the original song then you can learn to love this one.
Emotion is lost. Beautiful harmonies fade away. The meaning of the song becomes less prominent. Instrumentals are crapped all over and replaced with new ones. But lest we forget, this is a cover, people. It is not supposed to sound the same. If it did then it would be too comparable, and thus never amount to the original.
I respect what RZA has done because it is different, unexpected, unpredictable, and will certainly not be liked by everyone. A quick word of advice as well: computer speakers will not cut it for this song. I strongly suggest you slap on some headphones for this as most the ‘sounds’ are lost without them.
All I’m saying is that it isn’t for everyone, but it is different and memorable which is more than most of us can amount to. Too rude? Yeh whatever, if you get offended by it then it’s probably true. Enjoy!
